Consumers trust random Reddit users more than companies with $10M marketing budgets.

Honestly, one of the biggest search hacks on the internet is just adding the word “Reddit” to the end of your search query.

Why?

Because people are looking for real experiences from real humans — not perfectly polished messaging run through six rounds of approvals and a legal review.

At some point, brands became obsessed with optimization:

  • perfect tone

  • perfect messaging

  • perfect positioning

  • perfect polish

And in the process, a lot of them accidentally sanded off every human edge they had.

The result?

People now trust a Reddit thread written by someone named “xXDragonWizard420Xx” (not a real user) more than an official brand statement.

That’s not because branding is bad.

It’s because human connection will almost always outperform corporate perfection.

The Credibility Gap Brands Created Themselves

I already mentioned that brand voices forget that humans are trying to connect with humans, but ultimately that's where they first go wrong. Instead of talking like people, brands polish every word and tighten their messaging until they’re so afraid of saying the wrong thing that their language becomes robotic and boring.

This robotic approach often comes from a fear of vulnerability. Too much risk aversion strips away personality, curiosity, and honesty. Brands are too worried about saying the wrong thing that they start losing focus on saying the right things.

AND THAT, ladies and gentlemen, is the corporate agenda peeking through — making sure the crisis communications team doesn’t have to work overtime.

Why Real Voices Drive Word of Mouth

Instead of trying to sell a product, brands should be selling an experience. How will "product X" improve someone’s life? The more you showcase lived experiences, the more trust you build.

As trust builds, you create emotional connections that allow your audience to expand organically — because people share what feels real. The more you're able to connect the more you can expand, and the more easily you find new people to connect with.

Why?

You get people talking. The best marketing a company or brand can ask for is word of mouth. The more people talk, the more validation you earn — assuming they’re talking about the right things.

I recommend the book "Talk Triggers" by Jay Baer and Daniel Lemin to anyone who wants to understand how word-of-mouth marketing actually works.

NOTE: This is not a paid promotion. This is genuinely a book I recommend to EVERYONE in marketing.

How Brands Build Trust Without Faking Authenticity

  1. Elevate customer voice: Your customers are your strongest trust-builders. Testimonials, reviews, quotes — all of it matters.

  2. Empower employee storytelling: Don't sleep on your employees and coworkers. They've already bought in once — when they applied. Brands that invest in morale turn their teams into advocates.

However, if morale is low… don’t expect employees to cover for that. They can build trust — or break it just as quickly.

  3. Stop writing like legal-approved AI: I’m open about using AI in my writing. I even used it here to refine sentences and check grammar. In fact I used AI to reformat some of my sentences and make sure my grammar was correct and where it needed to be. What I didn’t do was let it write the entire blog. The more robotic you write and the more you lean into AI to write for you, the further you stray from your audience. Younger generations can spot AI from a mile away. The more you sound like ChatGPT, the faster you lose them.

People don’t distrust brands — they distrust the brand's motives. The more buttoned up you become and the more you step away from connecting with your audience the more you build distrust in your brand.

Stop broadcasting. Start building relationships. Use UGC. Get people talking. Bring real human voices into your marketing and build genuine connections with your customers.
